Position Summary

 

The Industrial Butcher / Poultry Preparer performs skilled poultry processing duties throughout the production process. Depending on operational requirements, employees may work in poultry hanging, evisceration, poultry preparation, meat cutting and trimming. The position involves the safe and efficient handling and preparation of poultry for further processing, packaging and distribution while meeting company food safety, quality, animal welfare and production standards.

 

Main Duties

  • Hang poultry onto processing line shackles in preparation for processing.
  • Handle and position poultry safely and efficiently throughout the processing operation.
  • Perform poultry evisceration and remove viscera, organs and other inedible parts from poultry carcasses.
  • Clean, trim and prepare poultry carcasses for further processing or packaging.
  • Inspect poultry during processing and remove feathers, skin, excess fat, bruises, blemishes or other unacceptable portions as required.
  • Cut whole poultry and poultry portions into specified cuts for further processing, packaging, commercial or wholesale use.
  • Debone, trim and portion poultry according to product specifications.
  • Inspect products for quality and ensure cuts and finished products meet company specifications.
  • Follow food safety, sanitation, quality assurance and animal welfare procedures.
  • Follow occupational health and safety requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Use knives and other processing tools to cut and trim poultry.
  • Maintain knives, tools and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Work efficiently as part of a production team to meet established processing and production requirements.
  • Perform other related poultry preparation, meat cutting and processing duties within the scope of the position.

 

 

Salary: $18.80-$20.80 hourly, 37.5 – 40 Hours per week as per your collective agreement

Requirements

 

Education

secondary school graduation is required

 

Experience

1 to 2 years of previous experience in poultry processing, meat processing, food processing, manufacturing, commercial meat cutting, slaughtering/evisceration or a similar production environment is required.

 

Skills

Using knives, cutting tools, processing equipment, and working on a fast-paced production line

 

Working Conditions and Physical Capabilities

This is a physically demanding position in a fast-paced poultry processing environment. Employees must be able to:

  • Stand for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Perform repetitive hand, wrist, arm, shoulder and upper-body movements.
  • Perform repetitive cutting, trimming, handling, hanging and poultry preparation tasks.
  • Bend, reach and twist and work in repetitive positions for extended periods.
  • Safely handle loads weighing up to 30 lbs (13.6 kg).
  • Maintain attention to detail while performing repetitive tasks at production-line speeds.
  • Work safely with knives, cutting tools, machinery and processing equipment, as applicable to the assigned position.

 

Work Site Environment

Work is performed indoors in a poultry processing facility. Employees may be exposed to poultry odours, wet or damp conditions, noise, processing equipment and varying temperatures depending on the assigned production area.

Applicants should be reliable, dependable, safety-conscious and able to work effectively as part of a team. Employees must be flexible in assigned duties, able to follow instructions, food safety procedures and production standards, and able to maintain quality and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.

 

Language Requirements: Ability to understand and communicate in basic English is required to follow work instructions, production requirements, food safety procedures, emergency directions and workplace health and safety instructions.

 

Additional Requirements

Employees may be assigned or rotated between poultry hanging, evisceration, trimming, cutting, deboning and other poultry preparation duties based on operational requirements, training and demonstrated competency.

Employees must be able to safely perform repetitive physical tasks for prolonged periods and comply with all food safety, occupational health and safety, animal welfare, sanitation and company requirements.

 

Employees must report to work fit for duty and able to safely perform the requirements of the position.
