BMT Group | Island Hino is seeking certified “Red Seal” Commercial Transport, Heavy Duty or Automotive Mechanics to join our team. We have openings in both our fleet centre and truck dealership facilities located in Sidney, BC. This is a full-time, permanent position and reports to the Service Manager.
The Position
The Service Department is a vital part of the dealership, and the way it builds open, honest, trusting relationships with customers and other departments are essential to the dealership’s success. The main objective of the Service Technician is to perform diagnosis and major repairs on vehicle components and systems for the Service Department.
Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostics and inspections to investigate and determine root causes of defective vehicle components and systems.
- Complete major repairs within specified times.
- Efficient and effective vehicle repair, maintenance, adjustment, & component replacement.
- Perform unsupervised work as outlined on major repair orders with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
- Perform repairs to brakes, suspension, drive train, transmission, engine, emissions, electrical and other vehicle systems efficiently and following best practice repair procedures.
- Remove, overhaul, and reinstall mechanical components.
- Perform Government Safety Inspections (CVSE).
- Perform preventative maintenance (PMs), pre-delivery (PDI), safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.
- Examine assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
- Perform emergency service calls and field service calls when required.
- Adhere to company standards, policies, and procedures.
- Road test vehicles for evaluation and diagnostic purposes as well as post repair validation and performance verification.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment and recommend improvements for shop safety.
- Engage with external manufacturers technical support engineers when escalation of diagnostics and repair paths are required.
- Poses a functional knowledge of the parts system and communicate with parts department to obtain required parts.
- Understand, keep abreast of current with, and comply with all federal, provincial, and municipal regulations that affect service operations, such as hazardous waste disposal, CVSE, EPA, and so on. Capable of identifying and communicating issues with management.
- Assist other technicians with major repairs.
- Display the ability to work in a team environment.
- Consult with service advisor about status of the vehicle repairs.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to customers and other technicians.
- Participate in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools, and events and make recommendations for other technicians within the shop.
- Document all work performed and recommended on a repair order using accepted language.
- Document all required information for successful completion of a warranty claims.
- Road test vehicles for evaluation and diagnostic purposes as well as post repair validation and performance verification.
- Ensure that customer’s vehicles are kept clean. Notify service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment and recommend improvements for shop safety.
- Maintain and be accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals. Identify issues with specialty tools and communicate to management. Make recommendations for tool replacement and inventory control.
- Operate shop equipment safely, report safety issues and recommend maintenance and repairs immediately to management.
- Display a work ethic that is consistent and ensures each job is done efficiently and completely.
- Possess great time management and organizational skills.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested by Manager.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Red Seal Mechanic certification in Commercial Transport, Heavy Duty, or Automotive trade, with 2 or more years of experience.
- Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certification is an asset (additional hourly incentive).
- Cummins & Hino Certifications (additional hourly incentive).
- Minimum class 5 drivers license with a clean drivers abstract required (preferred Valid class 3 or 2 driver's license with air endorsement).
- Must have a complete appropriate mechanic’s tool set.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment while providing a superior customer service experience.
- Must be able to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities and be responsive and flexible to best serve the issue at hand.
- Adhere to provincial CVSE standards and Federal Motor Vehicle Act and OEM best repair procedures.
- Strong problem solving and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Proficient with using computer systems for diagnostics, accessing manuals, schematics, repair procedures, as well as for documenting job reports and time clock.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $45.00-$50.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
