Salary – $63,700 annually / 35 hours per week

Responsibilities

 

Tasks

Plan or adjust routes based on changing conditions, using computer equipment, global positioning systems (GPS) equipment, or other navigation devices, to minimize fuel consumption and carbon emissions

Address customers' complaints or concerns

Coach colleagues on new methods or work techniques

Professionalism in customer service

Drive as part of a two-person team or convoy

Drive lighter, special purpose trucks

Load and unload goods

Obtain special permits and other documents required to transport cargo on international routes

Operate and drive straight or articulated trucks to transport goods and materials

Oversee condition of vehicle and inspect tires, lights, brakes, cold storage and other equipment

Pay and receive payments for goods

Perform brake adjustments

Perform emergency roadside repairs

Perform pre-trip, en route and post-trip inspection and oversee all aspects of vehicle

Perform preventive maintenance

Receive and relay information to central dispatch

Record cargo information, hours of service, distance travelled and fuel consumption

Tarping and ensuring safety and security of cargo

 

Additional Job Duties – Flatbed Truck Driver

 

• Inspect the flatbed trailer deck, anchor points, winches, stake pockets, rub rails and cargo-securement equipment before each trip.

• Determine the appropriate placement and distribution of freight to maintain safe axle weights, trailer balance and vehicle stability.

• Measure and verify the height, width, length and weight of loads to ensure compliance with applicable transportation requirements.

• Select and use appropriate chains, straps, binders, cables, blocks, braces, dunnage, edge protectors and other securement devices according to the type of freight being transported.

• Secure steel products, lumber, construction materials, machinery, pipes and other irregularly shaped freight to prevent movement, shifting, rolling or damage during transportation.

• Apply, secure, remove and properly store heavy-duty tarps to protect cargo from weather, moisture, road debris and other potential damage.

• Inspect cargo-securement devices at required intervals during transportation and tighten, adjust or replace equipment when necessary.

• Coordinate with shippers, receivers, crane operators and forklift operators during the loading and unloading of freight.

• Guide loading and unloading activities using hand signals, radios or other approved communication methods when required.

• Verify that freight matches bills of lading, shipping documents and customer instructions before departure and upon delivery.

• Inspect cargo for visible damage, shortages or loading discrepancies and report concerns to dispatch or management.

• Install required warning flags, banners, lights, signs and other safety markings for oversized or over-dimensional loads.

• Review and comply with special permits, designated routes, bridge restrictions, travel-hour limitations and escort requirements for oversized or overweight freight.

• Coordinate with pilot or escort vehicles when transporting oversized, overweight or specialized loads.

• Assess pickup and delivery locations for restricted access, uneven ground, overhead hazards and sufficient space for safe vehicle positioning.

• Maintain safe clearance from bridges, overhead structures, power lines and roadside obstacles when transporting tall or irregularly shaped freight.

• Keep chains, straps, binders, tarps, dunnage and other flatbed equipment clean, organized and in safe working condition.

• Report defective securement equipment, unsafe loading practices, overweight freight or improperly documented cargo to dispatch before departure.

• Follow safe lifting, climbing and fall-prevention procedures while working on or around the flatbed trailer.

• Adjust driving speed, braking distance and turning movements according to the weight, dimensions, centre of gravity and stability of the load.
