Job summary

Cobalt Construction Inc. is seeking a reliable Heavy Duty Mechanic Shop Hand (Mechanic Helper) to support its mechanical team in maintaining and servicing a fleet of heavy equipment at its Whitehorse, Yukon work location. The successful candidate will assist heavy-duty mechanics with maintenance and repair activities, equipment preparation, shop organization, materials movement, and related labouring duties under supervision. This is a support position and does not require trade certification as a heavy-duty equipment mechanic.

Main duties

• Assist heavy-duty mechanics with maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment.
• Wash, grease, and prepare heavy equipment for service under direction.
• Move tools, parts, supplies, equipment, and materials within the shop and work area.
• Perform general shop clean-up and organization duties to maintain a safe and orderly work area.
• Assist with parts inventory, shop supplies, and related record-keeping as directed.
• Operate basic tools and equipment safely under the direction of mechanics or supervisors.
• Follow company safety policies, safe-work procedures, supervisor instructions, and workplace communications in English.
• Perform other labouring and elemental tasks related to the shop and heavy-equipment maintenance operations as required.

Education

No formal education is required. Secondary school education is an asset but is not required unless Cobalt Construction Inc. confirms otherwise.

Experience and skills

• Previous experience as a mechanic helper, shop hand, labourer, or in a heavy-equipment shop environment.
• Experience working around heavy-duty equipment is an asset.
• Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn are required.
• Ability to lift and move heavy materials and perform physically demanding work is required.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s licence or higher is required.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team is required.
• Ability to understand English-language instructions, safety policies, and workplace communications is required.
• Ability to comply with Cobalt Construction Inc.’s fitness-for-duty and drug and alcohol screening requirements is required, where applicable.
