Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interpret work orders, blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine project requirements and prepare production plans
- Measure, mark, and lay out dimensions on wood materials according to specifications
- Operate woodworking machinery, including power saws, jointers, mortisers, shapers, and other specialized equipment, as well as hand tools to cut, shape, and fabricate wood components
- Assemble, fit, and install wood parts and subassemblies using adhesives, clamps, nails, screws, and other fastening methods to produce finished products
- Sand, finish, and apply veneers, stains, lacquers, or other protective coatings to enhance the appearance and durability of wood products
- Repair, refinish, or modify cabinetry, furniture, fixtures, and other wood products to meet customer or project specifications
- Estimate the quantity, type, and cost of materials required for manufacturing and installation projects and maintain efficient use of resources.
Qualifications:
- Completion of secondary school is usually required
- Completion of a four-year apprenticeship program or a combination of over four years of work experience in the trade and some high school or college courses in cabinetmaking is usually required to be eligible for trade certification
