Qualifications

• Foreign Trained Registered Nurse

• Retirement Home and/or Long-Term Care experience

• Certificate in Administration of Medications (Certified by RH Pharmacy Pharmacist)

• Effective interpersonal skills and strong organizational ability

• Leadership potential

• Able to fulfil the physical demands of the position

• Annual OCRA and WHIMIS certification

• Criminal Reference Check for Vulnerable Sector at hire and annual declaration.

Functions

  1. Applies current knowledge regarding resident needs, gerontological principles, nursing care, general health maintenance and promotion.
  2. Demonstrates accountability for his/her actions and decision making with respect to the provision of resident care.
  3. Practices competently within the legislated standards as set by the College of Nurses and determines by personal knowledge and skills by abiding by EWSL Delegated Task Policy.
  4. Provides ongoing assessment of resident health status in accordance with defined policy and procedures and updates the Charge Nurse of any and all findings.
  5. Provides input to the Charge Nurse (RPN) Director of Wellness/Physician regarding problem/strength statements contributing to the information of client physical/mental and/or cognitive changes. Also contributes information to the registered nursing staff in the development and modification of current, individualized, and standard nursing care plans.
  6. Identifies indicators of risk to resident health and report concerns to registered nursing staff.
  7. Contributes to resident care conferences
  8. Provides direct nursing care as defined by the Standards of Nursing Practice (CNO) including:
  • Administration of routine medications through oral, subcutaneous, topical, natural body orifices, intracutaneously, intramuscular, tubing routes except for medications that are described in the Medical Directives unless otherwise directed as a Delegated Task from the Charge Nurse. UCPs are not permitted to administer palliative care subcutaneous medications or any other medications below the skin surface without an RPN to validate the reason, and task at hand
  • Administration of routine medications including narcotics
  • Maintains security of medication system and storage
  • Orders medication as required and maintains MAR system
  1. Monitors and provides guidance to Personal Support Workers (PSWs) in the provision of nursing care within an assigned work area.
  2. Communicates effectively through the team leader role and in a respectful manner with residents, family, members of the health care team and staff of EWSL.
  3. Documents all aspects of resident care in a thorough and timely manner according to prescribed policy and procedure
  4. Contributes to the evaluation of nursing care by comparing resident status to expected outcomes and goes so that the Director of Wellness can modify the plan of care as appropriate.
  5. Demonstrates self-awareness in a realistic appraisal of personal practice, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and plan for professional development.
  6. Maintains safe and orderly unit environment ensuring adequate supplies are available.
  7. Maintains active membership in appropriate professional associations.
  8. Participates in other work-related duties as assigned by the Director of Wellness and Management.
  9. Maintains a positive and harmonious relationship with all members of the EWSL community.
  10. Participates in EWSL annual ORCA, WHMIS, etc., programs.
  11. Participates in EWSL Health and Safety program.
  12. Participates in in-service education as required
  13. Implements preventative Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC)
  14. Implements preventative Fall Prevention, Behavioral Management
  15. Ensures that all activities are carried out in a manner to reduce risk of injury to resident and staff
  16. Participates in other work-related duties as outlined by the Director of Wellness and/or Management.
