We are currently looking to strengthen our team with passionate Health Care Assistants (HCAs) (5 vacancies) who love working with seniors.

Reporting to the Executive Director and under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse, the Health Care Assistant (HCA) assists the resident in activities of daily living to meet physical, emotional, psychosocial and spiritual needs and maintain optimal functioning while promoting residents’ autonomy and choice. This is a high-trust position where the HCA provides the closest and most intimate care to our residents. We expect all care staff to display a caring attitude and resident centred approach to their jobs.

Job duties. A Health Care Assistant:
Assists the resident in maintaining a high level of personal hygiene including bathing, dressing, grooming, mouth care, skin care, nail care and hair care according to individual resident care needs as specified on the resident’s care plan. Provides bathing as per resident care plan.
Assists resident in meeting nutritional needs by encouraging independence with eating and drinking and providing assistance when and as required. Prepares and delivers nourishments and snacks. Promotes and provides adequate hydration based on resident needs. Assists in serving and feeding the resident as well as cleaning up the dining area after each meal. Notes and records or reports changes in appetites and food preferences to the nurse/dietitian.
In accordance with safety guidelines and based on the resident’s care plan, assists residents with rest and mobilization based on their current condition/ability. This includes use of the pre-handling check and adherence to all safety protocols for transferring, use of mechanical lifts, bath lifts, use of transfer belts, assisting with walking, and ambulation by wheelchair/therapeutic chair, positioning in bed or wheelchair and use of commode.
In accordance with established policies and procedures, encourages independence in maintaining continence, which will include: routine toileting, changing incontinence products, applying and caring for urinary drainage systems, ostomy care. Collects specimens and records intake and outputs. May administer suppositories and enemas under the direction of the RN/LPN.
Documents observations about the residents’ condition and care given on the health record using appropriate forms and reports changes in resident condition to the care team. Participates in the development of resident care plans in collaboration with the care team.
Performs resident /client assessment including: taking and recording temperature [oral, axilla, tympanic] pulse and respiration and blood pressure. Measures and records height and weight, and intake and output and documents as per facility policy.
Promotes skin integrity by encouraging mobility and observing and reporting any changes in skin condition. Applies medicated and non-medicated lotions, hot and cold packs, non-sterile dressings as directed by the RN or LPN. Monitors pressure relieving surfaces and reports any changes.
Assists in the appropriate use and maintenance of supportive devices including: sensory aids (hearing aids/glasses), communication devices, prostheses, compression stockings, splints and oxygen therapy.
Labels, sorts and washes personal laundry and distributes in-house linens.
Maintains proper care and identification of the resident’s clothing, personal effects and room. Ensures that families/significant others are made aware of the resident’s clothing needs.
Supports residents in meeting their psychosocial/spiritual needs including facilitating attendance at programs or events. Participates/assists during programs and events as required. Supports community/volunteer programs in the facility that enhances the quality of life for the resident.
Utilizes appropriate communications skills both verbal and non-verbal in caring for residents and families. Verbally communicates observations of resident condition to the RN/LPN.
Identifies and uses appropriate forms for charting and recording including an Electronic Health Record (EHR). Is able to operate technology including personal computers, touch screens, phone and communication systems effectively.
During the process of death and dying, works with the team leader/responsible nurse to ensure that comfort and dignity are maintained; assists with the care of the body using a holistic approach and following palliative care protocol.
Welcomes new residents and families to the facility by familiarizing them with the facility environment. Assists with the discharge of resident as required.
Assists resident in maintaining a safe and clean environment by ensuring that equipment and belongings are cleaned, stored and well maintained according to facility procedures.
Adheres to ACC policies and procedures regarding work place safety. Demonstrates knowledge of fire/emergency procedures and policies of the facility; participates in fire drills.
Communicates well with team members, residents and families. Participates in and supports program quality improvement activities as assigned, including attending meetings, education and committees as assigned.
Reports unsafe and faulty equipment to the responsible nurse and records same on the appropriate.
Answers call bells in a timely manner.
Follows applicable organization policies, procedure, standards, and governing regulations and legislations, including BC Care Aide Registry.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required qualifications, skills and abilities:
Some secondary school education and on-the-job training or a nursing aide or health care aide college or private institutional program, or a college nursing orderly program and supervised practical training are required
Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate
Current First Aid certificate
Previous residential care experience preferred and a genuine interest in working with the elderly and chronically ill is required
Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills are appreciated
Good English written and verbal communication skills
Well-developed analytical, judgment, decision-making, and conflict resolution abilities are an asset
Strong competency with operating computers and other health related technology are an asset
Ability to prioritize and multi task in a fast paces environment is an asset

These are full-time, permanent positions, based on 30 hours per week or more.

Medical & Extended Health Benefits are also offered after 450 hours worked. Extended Health Benefits consist of dental, vision, travel insurance, life insurance, counselling, and long term disability plan. And we also have a sick leave policy in place.

Wage: between $22.60 and $27.50 per hour. The starting salary step will be determined by the Executive Director upon hiring based on experience and proven skills. Salary increases one step after every 1,920 hours worked. We also offer shift premiums for HCAs.
