Staples Animal Hospital is seeking an experienced Veterinary Technician/Registered Veterinary Technician to join our team! We are a high volume small animal clinic, treating cats and dogs with the occasional pocket pet.

The ideal candidate is confident performing blood draws and cytology, monitoring and assisting in routine and emergency surgical anesthetics, completing radiographs and laboratory testing as well as being comfortable in emergency settings and having quality of life discussions.

Our appointments are driven by our technicians! Any candidate should feel confident in their communication skills with clients, including reviewing medical history, performing TPRs with clients, and client education and discharge.

Our clinic offers services in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish to meet the needs of our diverse clientele. A bilingual candidate (verbal and written) is preferred.

Technicians may be required to discuss nutrition and weight management (Royal Canin and Hills Nutrition training is an asset), prevention and control of zoonotic disease, animal behaviour and neonatal care.

This position requires a practical knowledge of hospital organization as well as the standard procedures, veterinary records and terminology used in the hospital. Applicants should have recent experience in a veterinary hospital setting.

Applicants will be required to pursue yearly continuing education to remain up-to-date on current veterinary standards.

Position type and expected hours of work:
Full-time 8 hour Shifts Monday – Friday
Overtime may be required (will be discussed on contract)

Education and Experience:
Completion of a Veterinary Technician degree; registration with the OAVT is preferred but not mandatory.
Corresponding education and work experience will be evaluated according to the position and provincial laws.
Four or more years’ recent experience in a veterinary practice is required.

Essential Functions:
Courteously and professionally address clients via telemedicine, email and/or in clinic.
Exercise time management skills and prioritize tasks and handle multiple tasks in a calm, organized manner.
Be comfortable working independently and with the team.
Start appointments, acquire a complete medical history and chief complaint prior to presenting to the veterinarian.
Have ability to complete blood draws, cytology and perform laboratory testing is required.
Provide care for in-house and drop-off patients (including cat, dog and pocket pets)
Perform surgical prep and monitor anesthesia for various routine and emergency surgeries is required.
Assist in the updating of client/patient files as needed.
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Technical Functions:
Knowledge of the spelling and meaning of commonly used terminology of veterinary medicine is required.
Ability to dispense and/or administer medications as prescribed by a veterinarian. The ability to discuss and educate clients concerning prescribed medications.
Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications. Knowledge of e-vet Practice, IDEXX and/or Abaxis systems is preferred.
