Description

 Respite Worker/Support Worker Job Description

                                                                             National Occupation Classification: 44101

I am seeking a full time support worker to work in our home with my 18 year old, non-verbal autistic son.

In addition to providing loving, energetic care, we also run a program which helps teach my son how to learn skills of independence and improves his overall quality of life.

Staff are also responsible for laundry, personal hygiene maintenance and light household duties as time allows.

My son has a seizure disorder, a feeding tube and an ileostomy (used for bowel care). Appropriate training will be provided to the right employee.  We are working on toilet training, but it is common for Luke to have voiding accidents.  This continues to improve over time.

My son experiences chronic pain that impacts his quality of life regularly.  This typically means he is struggling, crying, hitting himself, perseverating on non-toy items, etc.  These days can be emotionally heavy as it is hard to see him in pain and it is difficult to find things he enjoys doing.  These waves of upset are not predictable and tend to last a few days at a time.

On his good days, my son is very social, very affectionate, loves going on outings and is very fun to be with.

We have a hypoallergenic Portuguese Water Dog who is 3 years old. We also have an Autism Service Dog, Bezzie.  Bezzie is a 4 year old black lab.  While staff will not focus on the dogs while Luke is awake, it is important you are comfortable with a dog in the home.  You will be asked to let the dog out, feed it, take it on walks with my son when convenient, and some other very minor tasks like putting her in her crate when you leave the home.

Community outings with my son help improve his quality of life and enhance his life skills acquisition.  Community outings are required as part of everyday programming, making a reliable vehicle, valid Saskatchewan class 5 Driver’s License and safe driving record mandatory.

Outings may include taking him to public swims, sports games, public library, Wonderhub, Kinsmen Park, Forestry Farm, Western Development Museum, neighbourhood walks, grocery shopping, community events and more.

Hours of Work:

Full-time hours (72-80 hours bi-weekly) can include overnights, days and evenings.

Wage

$20/hr
